Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Review: Michael Keaton, Jenna Ortega & More!

I took a trip down memory lane and watched Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the highly anticipated sequel to the 1988 classic Beetlejuice. As someone who saw the original 36 years ago, I was instantly drawn to the trailer, which promised a blend of nostalgia and new energy. And it delivered!

Nostalgia Meets Freshness

While Beetlejuice Beetlejuice taps into the nostalgia of the original Beetlejuice, it doesn’t rely too heavily on it. Even if you haven't seen the 1988 film, this 2024 sequel holds its own. It was refreshing that it didn’t feel weighed down by the past, although knowing the backstory added depth to the experience.

A Powerful Female Cast

One of the things I loved about this movie was seeing three generations of women leading the story. Winona Ryder reprises her role as Lydia Deetz, joined by the ever-talented Catherine O’Hara and the always captivating Jenna Ortega, who plays Lydia’s daughter, Astrid. Their dynamic brought humor, heart, and just the right touch of spooky drama.

The Return of Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice

Seeing Michael Keaton return as the iconic Beetlejuice was a huge draw for me! His comedic timing is still sharp, and he brings the same ghoulish charm he did 36 years ago. The chemistry between Keaton and Ryder is still spot-on, making this movie a fun watch for both new audiences and longtime fans.

A Killer Soundtrack

Beyond the cast, one of the standout elements for me was the soundtrack. For days, I’ve had "MacArthur Park" by Donna Summer stuck in my head! The movie is packed with iconic songs that fit perfectly with the quirky and chaotic vibe of the film. Music played a huge role in why I loved Beetlejuice Beetlejuice so much. Soul Train, anyone?

A Visual Treat

Visually, this film embraces its quirky, old-school charm with fun stop-motion effects, while blending in modern techniques. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice delivers on the wacky, chaotic, yet entertaining visuals that fans of the original love. While some may find the plot a bit chaotic, I personally enjoyed the ride. It’s quirky and fun, and that’s what I loved about it.

A Box Office Hit

The movie opened with a monstrous $111 million — the second-biggest September opening ever, right behind It (2017). The film has a wide appeal, attracting both older fans and younger audiences, thanks to Jenna Ortega. Ortega, known for her role in Wednesday, has brought in a younger generation of fans, especially Hispanic moviegoers.

The Story

Without spoiling too much, the plot follows Lydia Deetz (Ryder) returning home with her family after a tragedy, only to find that her daughter Astrid (Ortega) has found herself in the afterlife. Of course, this is where Beetlejuice comes in, causing his usual mischief. The humor, eerie antics, and classic Beetlejuice chaos make it a fun watch.

Final Thoughts

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a must-watch for fans of all ages. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the original or new to the world of Beetlejuice, there’s something for everyone. The chemistry between Keaton, Ryder, O’Hara, and Ortega is electric. Don’t go in with too many expectations — just sit back, enjoy the chaos, and let Beetlejuice do his thing!
