Hey, everyone! The 2025 Oscar nominations are here, and WOW—what a lineup!
Even with the snubs and surprises! Here are the 10 Best Picture nominees:
🎭 Anora (Thriller/Romance/Comedy)
🏛️ The Brutalist (Architecture/Serious Tone)
🎸 A Complete Unknown (Bob Dylan Biopic, Music)
⛪ Conclave (Vatican/Religious Thriller)
🌌 Dune: Part Two (Sci-Fi, Space)
🎤 Emilia Perez (Musical/Drama)
🕵️ I’m Still Here (Mystery/Thriller)
📖 Nickel Boys (Book Adaptation, Historical)
🩸 The Substance (Horror/Thriller)
✨ Wicked (Fantasy/Musical)
I was absolutely THRILLED to see The Substance on there—especially Demi Moore’s incredible performance as lead actress. She really brought so much depth to her role, often carrying the emotion with very little dialogue. Her portrayal of a woman struggling with not feeling valued, especially in an industry where youth is prized above all else, was heartbreaking and powerful. It’s a sentiment that’s reflective of Hollywood—and society in general—where women of a certain age often feel unseen and insignificant. She’s a strong contender for Best Actress, and I’d love to see her win!
Now, I have to talk about Emilia Perez—I was a bit surprised it racked up so many nominations, 13! It was definitely thought-provoking and different, but not my personal favorite. It felt like one of those films that people don’t always love, but other films have won Oscars that weren’t universally adored. Could it pull off an upset? We’ll see!
On the flip side, I was SO happy to see Wicked and Dune: Part Two get recognition! Both films brought so much to the table, and the performances—especially from Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in Wicked—were electric. Speaking of Dune, wow! The cinematography and special effects are out of this world—definitely a standout.
Let’s talk A Complete Unknown—a Bob Dylan biopic. Timothée Chalamet was absolutely fantastic as Dylan, and I loved learning about the era. His performance made me feel like I was experiencing Dylan’s rise to fame. The heartbreak in Dylan's relationship with his live-in girlfriend, Sylvie Russo (based on Suze Rotolo), was especially moving. It really struck me. Also, the chemistry and dynamic with Joan Baez?? Wow, so compelling.
Speaking of Timothée Chalamet—did you know he’s the lead in TWO Best Picture-nominated films this year? Both Dune Part 2 and A Complete Unknown—and this is his second nomination! I’m thrilled for him, especially since he's so young—he’s joining James Dean as the youngest actors to achieve this feat. Secretly I’m wishing he wins, but I have a feeling Adrien Brody might take the award—though I haven’t seen The Brutalist yet!
Now, for the snubs—Furiosa not getting a cinematography nomination? Major disappointment. I loved that film and the performances. Same with Nosferatu—the acting was phenomenal, and the mood was immersive. I really thought it deserved more recognition.
And Denzel Washington! OMG. His performance in Gladiator II was mind-blowing, and I was truly bummed he didn’t get nominated. He was one of my favorites this year.
Lastly, I’m so excited about Colman Domingo’s nomination for Best Actor in Sing Sing. I’ve loved him since his Fear the Walking Dead days, and he’s done amazing work in Rustin, Euphoria, The Madness, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
So, what do you think about this year’s nominees? Any surprises, snubs, or films you’re rooting for? Let’s talk Oscars!
Stay tuned for a full breakdown in an upcoming episode of Screens in Focus, which will be out before the Oscars on March 2, 2025, at 4:00 PM PST!
